The Kazungula Ferry was replaced by the completed Kazungula Bridge in October 2020 - the ferry kept operating until 10 May 2021, with the bridge opening on 11 May 2021.
The motorized pontoon ferry used to operate between the border posts at Kazungula Zambia and Kazangula Botswana. It was one of the largest ferries in South Central Africa crossing the 400 m wide Zambezi River and the ferry had a capacity of 70 tonnes.
The crossing, about 500m long, is a fairly short trip, taking less than 10 minutes.
A new bridge is planned - but border officials say it will open in 2020 sometime.
The fees for the ferry for 1 car: Ferry: BWP200 (USD30/ZAR220/ZMK150), Toll fee: USD20, Kazungula council fee: ZMK30, Carbon tax (up to 3000cc) ZMK200 and Third party insurance (30 day) ZMK262.
When taking a vehicle onto the pontoon, drivers should know that small vehicles (including 4x4’s) go on first, then a big truck and if there is space more small vehicles behind the truck. The ferry guards will motion the driver to come forward and where to park. Only the driver is allowed to be in the vehicle, passengers need to board the pontoon on foot once all the vehicles are on.
