Khwai (formerly known as North Gate) is a group of sites in the Moremi Game reserve. The area is well known for it's extensive variety of animals and the San Bushmen, who have a growing community nearby.
A beautiful, small-scale campsite with 10 camping pitches with clean ablution blocks equipped with hot and cold showers. There is no fencing, so campers must be weary of visits from wildlife at the camp. Campsites are grouped together each with their own braai/BBQ area. In 2021 it was reported that this camp was very clean and well maintained. They are cleaned daily by staff of the SKL-group.
Solar heating is used, so in winter you can expect the shower water to be cold in the morning.
In 2021, game drives to the east of the camp is no longer possible due to heavy rains in past seasons, making most roads impassible. The area to the west along the Kwai river is beautiful with plenty of game.
This camp does allow children, but the campsites are not fenced, be alert please.
Wood can be purchased from the office.
Reservations must be made in advance and paid at the Maun Office of the S.K.L. Group of Camps (Mapula lodge). Once the camping fee has been paid, a confirmation voucher will be received where upon Park Entry fees and vehicle fees must be paid through the Department of Wildlife at central pay points or at the entrance gate to Parks. For more information on pay points contact the DWNP.

“Camp was clean and well maintained in July 2021. Baboons still a problem, so do not leave anything outside, especially unattended foodstuff. It is not a good idea to visit in the rainy season, as the area gets flooded. In winter the shower water is cold in the morning due to a solar system being used. Game drives to the east of the camp is no more possible due to heavy rains in past seasons, making most roads impassible. The area to the west along the Kwai river is beautiful with plenty of game.” - Mietsie Visser, 2021/08/11
“Camp was a mess. No water, no cleaning had been done and the camp was a mudhole. Only used 4x4 in the park when entering and exiting the campsites due to huge rutted out holes. Hyenas were not shy, be really carefull with children and never walk to toilets alone. February 2018” - Hielke Sportel, 2018/04/10
“Camped at Khwai - Northgate in February 2016. Ablutions were kept spotless and in full working order. The campsites were also clean and maintained daily. Our experience was superb. The community were welcoming and warm. Game though was rather sparse but then that's just what it was at that time. Great experience.” - Charles Becker, 2016/04/30
“In 2010 new ablusion blocks were erected at the campsite.” - Mietsie Visser, 2012/04/11
“The site is under trees on the banks of the river Khwai but is infested by a troop of well fed vervet monkeys. The two ablution blocks have flush toilets but are sadly in need of renovation which could be coming soon.” - David Clack, 2009/02/01
