Booking

Mthatha was founded as Umtata in 1879 and declared the capital of the Transkei. The name was derived from the Sneezewood (umtati) trees, that grew on the banks of the Mtata River. The town has been host to British Colonial forces, as well as the seat of the traditional authorities from 1976 to 1994. On 2 March 2004, Umtata was renamed to Mthatha.
