Welkom is South Africa's youngest City and was established in the centre of the gold fields in 1947 after gold was discovered on a farm called St Helena. Welkom received City status on 14 Feb 1968. Welkom has grown with a rate that is perhaps even faster than that of Johannesburg, yet is proud to note that its traffic system which comprises largely of traffic circles was so well designed that they still only have the need for a few traffic lights. It boasts a few museums and monuments, as well as theatres, flea markets and South Africa's newest race track, Phakisa Raceway. Shopping Malls in the city to visit are Goldfields Mall (with a 24h Casino), Welkom Square, Liberty Centre and lots more. (Updated Feb-15).
