Jagersfontein is a small town situated within the Springbok route, Free State Province. The town started on the property of a Griqua Jacobus Jagers, hence the name was derived from there. Now the town is under the Kopanong municipality. In 1870 the famous diamond mine was discovered, one of the deepest hand excavated mine in the world. This was the second town in South Africa to get electricity and piped water when residents used coin operated water pumps because of the development of the diamond mine. Historical open mine museum documents the town history, the graveyard and historic water pumps. (Sept-13).
