Graaff-Reinet, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa is the fourth oldest town in the country after Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Swellendam, It lies 750 metres above MSL and is built on the banks of the Sunday's River, which rises to the north of the town on the southern slopes of the Sneeuberge. It was founded by the VOC Dutch East India Company in 1786, and named after the governor of The Cape Colony, from 1784 to 1791, Cornelis Jacob van de Graeff, and his wife whose maiden name was 'Reynet'. The town is surrounded by the 200 km Camdeboo National Park, where fossils of some of the earliest forms of one-celled life have been discovered. Indications are that life has existed in this region for three billion years. Numerous pre-dinosaur fossils have been found there. The town has magnificent examples of Cape Dutch architecture, and more than 220 heritage sites. (More than any other town in the Country).
