The Vaal Dam is South Africa's second biggest dam by area and the fourth largest by volume. It was constructed in 1938 and lies 70 km south of Johannesburg. The lake behind the dam wall has a surface area of about 320 km² and is 47 meters deep. The Dam lies on the Vaal River, which is one of South Africa's strongest-flowing rivers. It has over 800 km of shoreline and is bigger than Luxembourg. The water comes from two sources, the Vaal River and now the Wilge River that receives fresh mountain water form the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. This water is piped from Lesotho into the Liebenbergsvlei and Wilge Rivers, and supplied to the municipalities of Johannesburg.
