The Sani pass comprises of 1 trail, 180km long, and will take 2 days to complete. Low range gears are required to complete this trail, trail guides are available, but not obligatory, camping facilities and covered accommodation is available.
It's a magical trip into the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, with breathtaking scenery that some compare to the Alps or Himalayas. It's a route you can do on your own as these are public roads, or opt for a catered, guided tour.
Take a drive on the most beautiful roller coaster in the world, a route known as The Roof of Africa across the Sani Pass into Lesotho and to Katze Dam, which includes awe-inspiring mountain passes and gorgeous scenery.
You will need a tough 4x4, with some experience to withstand the tough roads. Remember your passport and prepare for all weathers, no matter what time of year you travel.
The Sani pass has a road tax the fee for vehicles, vehicles with trailers and bikes of ZAR30 and if your vehicle's Tare mass exceeds 2000kg then it is ZAR60, you fall under a goods vehicle (for example Land cruiser, Discovery). This is a guideline and fees may change.

GENERAL:
Sani Pass is the mother of all South African mountain passes. Statistically and in every sense, it out distances, out climbs, and out performs all it's competitors with consummate ease to have become the most iconic gravel pass in SA. Situated between KZN and Lesotho the pass was built circa 1950 and remains a challenging drive in 4x4 vehicles with all the drama, scenery, bad weather and treacherous conditions expected of a pass with a summit altitude of 2876m ASL. That equates to 9400 feet and at 10,000 feet aircraft need pressurised cabins! This is high altitude stuff. Go prepared for bad weather at any time and expect snowfalls as late as October. KATSE DAM TO TOP OF SANI PASS:
Locals will tell you that from Katse Dam to the top of Sani Pass, it will take you 2.5 hours - but be prepared for about 5 to 6 hours. It is very scenic with lots of passes (steep climbs) and curves.
ROAD CONDITION:
Reportedly this pass was in good condition but still with many road works. The Chinese are working hard on the road - but still not much tar in sight. (Jul-14).
Road works should be finished by now and the roads should be tarred almost all the way from St James School to the top of Sani Pass. (March 2015).
