Lake Magadi can dry up at the end of the dry season, but fills up again in the rainy season. Lake Magadi is located in the southern part in the Kenyan Rift Valley. North of Tanzania's Lake Natron, lying in a catchment of faulted volcanic rocks. It is mostly covered by soda during the dry season, is it well known for its bird life including flamingos. The lake is approximately 100 square kilometres in size and is a saline, alkaline lake, it lies in a trench. In some places on the lake the salt is up to 40 m thick. Magadi Township is located on the east shore of the lake; it is home to the Magadi Soda factory, owned by Tata India since December 2005. .
