There are 4 trails of 20km each, and would take 2 to 4 hours to complete. The trails are suitable for a 4X2 vehicle with a diff lock, low range gears are required to complete this trail, vehicle needs good ground clearance, it is a self-drive trail, GPS waypoints are available, there is good cell phone signals, camping facilities and covered accommodation is available, the trail has shade and swimming is possible. Mabote River Camp lies beneath the watchful eye of the Waterberg massive sandstone cliffs. You can enjoy a picnic and the splendour of the panoramic views, 2 000m above sea level.
Mabote is only three hours from Gauteng and in a malaria-free area. Day visitors are welcome (except over weekends). On registration you get a map and a brochure with all the relevant information about the four trails, such as distances, trail conditions and sightseeing opportunities along each of the four trails. The trails are well marked with arrows and signs in the colour of each trail. Mabote's trails offer a surprisingly rich variety of driving conditions including sand, water, mud and rocks.
What's more, the skills level required by the trails vary considerably from season to season. From April-September the trails are mostly sandy, with intermittent wet, marshy sections and a few interesting cross-axle challenges.
During the rainy season (October-March) however, everything becomes just a bit more challenging. Accommodation: The main camp sleep 12, in three separate huts, with a social area, fireplace, bar and fully equipped kitchens.
A wooden deck offers an awesome view over the river and sandstone cliffs from all accommodation. The secluded self-catering Koko Chalet, serviced daily, sleeps six, has hot showers and a fully equipped kitchen, but no electricity.
The Mountain Camp has hot showers, a large boma and accommodates 14 tents or caravans. Swim in rock pools at the waterfall (after rains) or hike through indigenous fauna and flora as you listen for the call of the fish eagle and watch black eagles nesting on the cliff above the Berg Camp.
There are Bushmen paintings on the rocks above the camp. Enjoy the beautiful sunsets while enjoying cocktails at the grass lapa or around the fire. Game drives on a nearby farm can be arranged. Fishing (Florida Bass), mountain biking and quads allowed. Visit the art factory during the week. Pets are welcome and all meals can be arranged. (Information supplied by DriveOut Magazine).
