THE HERERO PEOPLE WERE THE ORIGINAL SETTLERS here and they called this place Otjiwarongo which means ‘Place Where Fat Cattle Graze’. The name is still appropriate as Otjiwarongo is home to some of Namibia’s largest beef producers.
As with many other Namibian towns, Otjiwarongo developed around a Rhenish missionary station; a treaty was signed in 1891 between German missionaries and the Herero chief. A German military garrison arrived in 1904 when a bloody war broke out between the Hereros and Germans. The town was officially founded in 1906 with the implementation of a narrow-gauge railway from Swakopmund to the mines at Otavi and Tsumeb. Today, Otjiwarongo is the biggest business centre in the province and one of Namibia’s fastest-growing settlements. It still has a large population of German speakers
and the German influence is evident in its buildings.
The town has all the amenities usually associated with a large town and is a favourite refreshment stop for travellers en-route to Etosha National Park.
The main point of interest here is Locomotive No 41 which was originally brought from Germany to haul ore between Tsumeb and the port at Swakopmund, it was finally retired from service in 1960. Otjiwarongo is a beautiful town and has a lot to offer; what's more, some of Namibia's best-known private game farms and nature reserves are located nearby.
The town is in close proximity to the popular Waterberg Plateau National Park and other attractions include the Okonjima Cheetah and Leopard Rehabilitation Centre where visitors can get close to cheetahs, as well as Crocodile Ranch, Namibia’s first crocodile farm.
