You will find Oranjemund just north of the Orange River mouth. This mining town was built in 1936 after the discovery of significant diamond deposits on the riverbanks and up the coast to the north. Formerly run by Consolidated Diamond Mines (CDM), the town later fell under the stewardship of Namdeb - a joint venture between the Namibian government and De Beers Centenary AG. After mining in the area began to wind down, Oranjemund became an independent municipal entity and access restrictions were removed in 2017.
Compared to the surrounding countryside, this neatly-planned town is an oasis with tree-lined streets, parks, and much greenery. A lush 18-hole golf course stands in stark contrast to the four kilometres of wild, unspoilt beachfront adjacent to the river mouth. The reed channels at the river mouth (itself part of the RAMSAR proclaimed Gariep River Wetland), are an area of prolific birdlife.
Since Oranjemund was opened to the public, it stands every chance of becoming Namibia’s southernmost coastal attraction. Recently there is a big tourism drive to prevent Oranjemund of becoming yet another ghost mining town. Tour operators offer excursions into the Tsau//Khaeb National Park as well as cultural tours and activities like canoeing and kayaking.
Many travellers are beginning to use Oranjemund as an entry point to Namibia, taking the tar road to Rosh Pinah.
