Originally named 'Nuwe Dorp', the town was established in 1936 as a trading post for the region's farming community. It was later renamed Khorixas after the water bush, Salvadora persica (‘Gorigas’ or ‘Khoris’ in Khoekhoegowab, the Damara language), which are found in Damaraland. This shrub grows approximately 3m tall and has succulent leaves sought after by the desert elephant which roams the Kunene region. The Damara use the plant to make a potent beer.
Khorixas used to be the capital of Damaraland, but after Namibia's independence Damaraland was incorporated into the Kunene region, with Opuwo as the administrative capital.
The town is home to the Damara people who keep small livestock like goats and sheep, unemployment is high.

Khorixas itself is not a touristy town but you will be able to stock-up and find basic facilities.
An OK Foods is now in town, and is quite well stocked. (Jan-2019).
