Mariental was founded in 1912 as a railway stop between Windhoek and Keetmanshoop. It's one of the main towns of south-central Namibia and serves as a business centre for the surrounding commercial cattle farms. For travellers passing through on the B1 highway it offers good facilities and services.
The Hardap Game Reserve 45km west of Mariental is home to several bird and large mammal species. It encloses Namibia’s largest dam, the Hardap Dam, which is situated on the Fish River. With a surface area of 25km², the dam is a popular angling destination and home to a successful freshwater fish institute.
Hendrik Witbooi, the Nama leader during the War of Resistance (1904-1907) against German rule, had his home in Gibeon, a small village 65km south of Mariental. The town is better known for the discovery of large pieces of the 15+ ton Gibeon meteorite. These pieces are on display in the Post Street Mall in Windhoek.

|Notes on Activities:||(Some activities may be offered nearby).|
There is a Spar with its own bakery, butchery and Tops Liquor store. Gas refill at W. Von Watzdorf (Feb-12). (Feb-2014): Take note: Garage or Petrol cards will no longer be accepted as a legal tender for purchase of fuel, spares or repairs in Namibia.
Cash, Debit and Credit cards are legal payment instruments, but many fuel stations choose NOT to accept Debit and/or Credit cards.
Therefore you are advised to either carry cash or ensure that the filling stations you intend to use will accept your Debit or Credit card. (Feb-2014).
A traveller travelling to Namibia during May 2014, found that a credit card was accepted at garages at these places: Swakopmund, Ai-Ais, Solitaire, Sesriem and Lüderitz. It seemed to be possible to pay by credit/debit card at the major tourist towns. Take extra cash with still in case! (May-2014). Railway station available.
The nearby Hardap Dam, which is the largest reservoir in Namibia, has been developed as a popular water sport and holiday resort for tourists, campers, water-skiers and anglers.
