Mariental was founded in 1912 as a railway stop between Windhoek and Keetmanshoop. It is one of the main towns of south-central Namibia and serves as a business centre for the surrounding commercial cattle farms. For travelers passing through on the B1 highway, it offers good facilities and services.
The Hardap Game Reserve 45km west of Mariental is home to several bird and large mammal species. It encloses Namibia’s second largest dam, the Hardap Dam, which is situated on the Fish River. With a surface area of 25km², the dam is a popular angling destination and home to a successful freshwater fish institute.
Hendrik Witbooi, the Nama leader during the War of Resistance (1904 – 1907) against German rule, had his home in Gibeon, a small village 65km south of Mariental. The town is better known for the discovery of large pieces of the Gibeon meteorite, which weighs more than 15 tons. These pieces are on display in the Post Street Mall in Windhoek.
The town offers all the facilities and services a traveller may need before heading off into the surrounding Namib and Kalahari deserts. The local Spar is well stocked with supplies and has its own bakery and Tops liquor store next door. Gas can be refilled at Watzdorf Hardware or Agra.

Camping as well as self-catering accommodation is offered at the nearby Hardap Game Reserve.
ATTRACTIONS:
The nearby Hardap Game Reserve is a very popular destination amongst locals and tourists alike. Activities like game drives, bird watching, guided walks and boat trips are available.

Gas can be refilled at Von Watzdorf Hardware or Agra or Agrimark.
FUEL:
Take note: Garage or Petrol cards will no longer be accepted as a legal tender for purchase of fuel, spares or repairs in Namibia. Cash, Debit and Credit cards are accepted at most fuel stops in the larger and touristy towns. Just always take extra cash with in case they only accept cash!
