Booking

The town of Karibib has a rich history. Expecting business opportunities to arise from the railway construction between Swakopmund and Windhoek, Eduard Hälbich, a merchant from Otjimbingwe, bought a nearby waterhole called Otjandjomboimwe as well as 20 000 hectares of surrounding land from Herero headman Zacharias Zeraua. The deal was finalised on 7 January 1895 and two years later Hälbich opened a branch at what would later become known as Karibib.

Karibib grew rapidly when the railway construction reached the newly founded town. 1 June 1900 marks the day of the official foundation of Karibib when the first train arrived from Swakopmund. The railway station was built, a medical practice, storage facilities, a prison as well as living quarters for the railway workers. But when the railway workers moved on towards Windhoek in 1902, business quietened down.

However, in 1904 the place experienced a revival as a railway hub for ferrying troops in the Herero and Namaqua War. On 8 December 1907 a reserve for the Herero was proclaimed in the vicinity of Otjimbingwe, whilst the remaining Herero land was confiscated and offered to the resident farmers in the district, a process which lasted until 1909, by which time Karibib district already numbered 837 white settlers, traders and farmers. Over the following few years the farming community grew strongly; later, high quality marble and gold were found and mined in the area.

Traveller Description

The beautiful Erongo Mountains dominate the Karibib skyline. There are a number of tourist attractions in the vicinity, like Spitzkoppe, Philipp's Cave (known for its rock art and archaeological findings) and the Erongo Singing Rocks. The town itself is not really a touristy town, but rather a stop for refreshments, replenishing stocks and refuelling. The Old Station Building is a national monument and places worth visiting include Hälbich House, Christ Church and the Henckert Tourist Centre in the main street.
