Maltahöhe was established in 1899 as an outpost for the German Schutztruppe. The Maltahöhe Hotel, founded in 1907, is the oldest country hotel in Namibia and part of the original building is still in use. In the 1900s the bar was a popular watering hole for Hans Heinrich Von Wolf, master of Duwisib Castle, and it still serves this purpose for thirsty locals and travellers.
These days the town is a business centre for sheep and cattle farmers, and serves as a tourist gateway for popular destinations such as Sossusvlei, Solitaire, Sesriem and Duwisib Castle.
Leliepan (Lily pan), 41km north of Maltahöhe, is usually bone-dry but after good rains this salt pan fills with water and a few days later the entire 800 hectare surface of the pan becomes covered with Amaryllis lilies (Crinum paludosum). This beautiful display of white and pink flowers only lasts for a week and usually takes place around February.
Maltahöhe offers most facilities and services that travellers may need and is a popular overnight destination for travellers en-route to Sossusvlei, Sesriem and the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The Duwisib Castle is worth a visit too. The cemetery at the farm Nomtsas, 60km west of Maltahöhe, contains the graves of German pioneers and is a national monument. The site is situated on a private farm and thus, permission must be obtained before visiting the graves.
