Description [ correction ]

Maltahöhe was established in 1899 as an outpost for the German Schutztruppe. The Maltahöhe Hotel, founded in 1907, is the oldest country hotel in Namibia and part of the original building are still in use. In the 1900s the bar was a popular watering hole for Hans Heinrich Von Wolf, master of Duwisib Castle, it still serves the same purpose for thirsty locals and travellers today.

These days the town is a business centre for sheep and cattle farmers, and serves as a tourist gateway for popular destinations such as Sossusvlei, Solitaire, Sesriem and Duwisib Castle.

Leliepan (Lily pan), 41km north of Maltahöhe, is usually bone-dry but after good rains this salt pan fills with water; a few
days later the entire 800 hectare surface of the pan becomes covered with Amaryllis lilies (Crinum paludosum). This beautiful
display of white and pink flowers only lasts for a week and usually takes place around February.
