The small town of Tsumkwe was the capital of the former Bushmanland District which now forms part of the Otjozondjupa region. Before Namibian independence from South Africa, the town was home to the 36th Battalion of the South African Defence Force. These days the town is a lot smaller but you'll still find an airstrip, a few houses, some shops and a fuel station.
Traveller DescriptionTsumkwe is situated in the Nyae-Nyae. It is the last town you'll drive through before entering Khaudum National Park from the south, or entering Botswana through the Dobe border post to the east. It's also significant to travellers as the place to visit Bushmen (San) villages. Visitors should stop at the G!hunku Craft Centre which both exhibits and sells arts and crafts made by the local San; items like ostrich egg jewellery, glass beads and hunting bows.

Visitors can arrange to visit these settlements accompanied by a local guide; enquire at the Nyae Nyae Conservancy Office in town or at one of the lodges in the area. Visitors must bear in mind that the San people’s lifestyle has become largely westernised, so their traditional culture can best be observed at The Living Museum of the Ju/’Hoansi-San, 150km west of Tsumkwe. Tsumkwe Lodge has comfortable bungalows, a small pub and restaurant, a camping
area, and offers the guided San walks referred to previously.

The C44 between Tsumkwe and the intersection with the B8 is a good gravel road, accessible to sedan vehicles. However, note that all other roads are either deep sand (or mud in the Jan - Mar rainy season) and should only be driven in an off-road vehicle, preferably with an experienced off-road driver. Although the Dobe border post can be reached in a sedan with reasonable ground clearance (depending on seasonal rains), travellers wishing to enter Botswana will need an off-road vehicle on that side. There is a veterinary fence on the C44 at Rooidag, 145km west of Tsumkwe, which limits the transport of raw meat and unpasteurised milk from east to west, but not from west to east. However, this could change in the event of a Foot-and-Mouth outbreak.
The General Dealer is well-stocked with food, liquor, fresh bread, frozen meat and hardware, but they don't have fresh meat, vegetables or fruit.
“Don't expect to see any true Bushmen in Tsumkwe. The Bushmen descendants living here are very Westernised. ” - Karin Theron, 2014/03/11
