Kalkrand is so small it can hardly be called a town but its general dealer, fuel station, school, police station and public clinic comfortably sustains the local farming community. The town is situated on the B1 national road between Mariental and Windhoek; the pans to its east are a big tourist attraction and various upmarket lodges can be found in amongst the red Kalahari dunes. Activities offered nearby include game drives, guided dune hikes, and mountain biking.
Traveller DescriptionThe area around Kalkrand is renowned for its pans, of which Bitterwasser is the most famous. Situated 62km east of Kalkrand, it offers excellent thermal conditions for gliders and thus many gliding records are broken during the annual gliding season (Oct - Feb). A palm tree is planted for every record that falls and these line the avenue leading to the airfield.

Fuel supplies here aren’t guaranteed.
Take note: Garage or Petrol cards will no longer be accepted as a legal tender for purchase of fuel, spares or repairs in Namibia. Cash, Debit and Credit cards are accepted at most fuel stops in the larger and touristy towns. Just always take extra cash with in case they only accept cash!

SHOPS:
Fresh meat, takeaways and basic necessities are available at the general dealer.
At the turnoff to Duineveld, 20km north of Kalkrand, there are a few roadside stalls where one can buy springbok rugs.
