Helmeringhausen was originally founded as a farm by a member of the Schutztruppe, the colonial armed force of Imperial Germany. Today it still is a privately-owned farm from which two plots were sold to the garage and the general dealer. Apart from these two businesses and the public roads, everything is owned by Farm Helmeringhausen.Traveller Description
Helmeringhausen is located 500km south of Windhoek and 200km north-east of Lüderitz on the crossing of the C13 and C14 national roads. It's a popular stopover for tourists heading north for Sossusvlei and beyond. The farm owners established the Helmeringhausen Hotel which offers rooms as well as camping facilities. They also have self-catering accommodation across the road. Although their menu is limited in size, the hotel offers excellent meals and high tea. There's a variety of camping and lodging options on offer on farms in the area. The Tirasberg area south-west of Helmeringhausen is particularly beautiful - these mountains turn deep carmine red in the late afternoon.
