The historical village of Dordabis was established in the early 20s by August Stauch who purchased the Dordabis, Ibenstein and Protea farms to develop as a trade centre. Stauch had originally established a diamond claim at Kolmanskop outside Lüderitz in 1908. His daughter Marianne, and her husband Nicolai Krafft, started Karakul sheep farming and opened the first carpet weavery in Namibia on the farm Ibenstein.
Dordabis mostly serves the farming community which is focused on hunting or livestock farming.
The Arnhem Cave, 67km north-west of Dordabis, is at 4.5km in length, Namibia’s largest and longest cave. It was discovered in 1930 and is inhabited by six different bat species, including the giant leaf-nosed bat which is the largest insect-eating bat in the world. Guided tours offered by the nearby lodge last up to three hours.

Dordabis store: +264(0)62 573 500.
Dordabis is 90km from Windhoek and easily reached by sedan vehicle on a tarred road. The general dealer sells bread and frozen meat, but availability of produce cannot be guaranteed. Rather stock up in larger towns or call ahead to check on availability.
