Located in Namibia :: Kaokoland  :: Ruacana Area
Category: Places :: Town Small

Booking

Ruacana is located on the Kunene River, the border between Angola and Namibia. The town was developed around an underground hydroelectric plant which was linked to the nearby dam. This was bombed by a Cuban airstrike in 1988 during the Angolan Civil War. The plant was partially repaired and today it is used by Nampower which operates three turbines. Etunda is a community project located near Ruacana which produces maize, wheat, watermelons, bananas and other produce. Half of the 600 hectares is commercially-irrigated farmland and the rest is allocated to small-scale farmers.
