Vaalwater, is a small town, also known as Mabatlane, is the most central town for exploring the Waterberg. Vaalwater is the only town within the official boundaries of the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere.

The Waterberg is the size of Kruger Park and Vaalwater is the only town inside Waterberg. Vaalwater has 3 shopping centers, a multitude of other shops, game butchers, 3 fuel stations, banks, doctors, police, restaurants, art, curio, crafts etc. Various farms selling fruit/veg, goat cheese etc.

Shakati is only 20 kilometers from town.
