Klerksdorp was founded in 1837, and is one of the oldest European settlements of the former Transvaal. The town was named after the first magistrate of the area, Jacob de Clercq. Klerksdorp has seen a gold rush, been host to a concentration camp in the Anglo-Boer War, and is the birthplace of well-known Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.
