Badplaas is situated in the grasslands region of Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. It lies in the valley of the Komati River 48km east of Carolina, on the Barberton road. It is a small resort town that lies next to a hot sulphurous spring at the foot of the Ndlumudlumu (Swazi: Place of Much Thunder) range of hills. The springs bubble out of the ground at 30,000 litres an hour and was known by earlier inhabitants as Emanzana (Healing Waters). It has been said that the area around the spring was given to Jacob de Clercq by a Swazi chief in 1876. Jacob de Clercq then built a trading store there. The area was declared state property in 1893 by President Paul Kruger and the little town of Badplaas grew from the infrastructure built to support visitors.
