A small town on the border between Zambia and Botswana that’s home to the Kazungula Ferry which transports vehicles across the Zambezi River between the two countries. This border post is part of the major south-north transport line between South Africa’s Durban harbour and Zambia. The Kazungula Bridge is under construction and should be completed in 2020. This will replace the ferry and ease the flow of traffic between the two countries.
Traveller DescriptionThe Kazungula Bridge crosses the Zambezi River into Zambia, travellers heading for Namibia have to enter via the Ngoma Bridge border post and visitors to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe side) make use of the Kazungula Road border post. Note that you can also view the falls from Livingstone (Zambian side).
Even though queues at the Kazangula Road border post into Zimbabwe are often long due to tourists traveling to Victoria Falls, overlanders reported that this is an easy and efficient border post, as long as you have all the documents you need. Simply follow the numbers from counter to counter.
If you cross into Zambia, a bridge fee ($20 in 2024) is payable on top of normal cross-border charges. Sometimes the card machine is down, so it is best to have dollars or kwacha handy, depending on where you are heading.

If you are travelling between Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, the fuel is much cheaper in Botswana. Kwa Nokeng Oil reportedly has the lowest fuel prices in town. To avoid the queue of tourists at the Kazungula Road Border post into Zimbabwe, arrive before 07h30 - most big tour buses leave their lodges from 08h00 onwards. On the Zambian side, you’ll want to overnight in Livingstone rather than Kazungula.
