Addis Ababa Founded by Emperor Menelik in 1887, Addis Ababa (sometimes spelled Addis Abeba), is the capital city of Ethiopia. It is situated in the foothills of the 3,000 meter high Entoto Mountains, has an area of more than 21,000 hectares and a population of more than two million people. Addis Ababa is the economic and social nerve-centre of Ethiopia and has the status of both a city and a state. The African Union and its predecessor the OAU are based there. It is thus often referred to as 'the capital of Africa', due to its historical, diplomatic and political importance.
