Founded in 1635, Gonder served as the capital of the country for 250 years. Today it is a bustling, large, modern town by Ethiopian standards and the castles, built by various kings in the 17th century in a walled area called the Royal Enclosure on a hill in the centre of the town must rank as some of the best in Africa.
