Zanzibar is an archipelago consisting of two Islands, Unguja (commonly referred to as Zanzibar Island) and Pemba. It is located in the Indian Ocean, about 40 km from the Tanzanian coast. The main official languages are Kiswahili and English. Zanzibar is known for its alluring sandy beaches and its fascinating historic Stone Town. Though Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, it has its government led by its own President and since 1995 it is a multiparty democracy. (Updated July-15).
