Formerly known as the Eastern Transvaal, Mpumalanga lies in the north-east of South Africa. It is bordered by Mozambique in the east and Swaziland in the south-east and is known for its scenic beauty and historical sites and villages.
The region has some impressive mountains, lofty passes, dramatic valleys, rivers and forests. The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve near Graskop has striking rock formations and a rich diversity of plants. Within the Blyde River Canyon, the Bourke's Luck potholes were formed by river erosion and the action of flood water.
From the top of the canyon you will have amazing views to the Kruger National Park and beyond to Mozambique. No wonder it is called God's window! The southern section of South-Africa's largest and most famous National Park, the Kruger National Park, lies in Mpumalanga.
The park has superb facilities, with an excellent network of roads and game-viewing waterholes. The camps are big and have every amenity, from shops to banks to laundromats. There are also some smaller luxury camps for a more intimate experience with the bush.
The more adventurous can do one of the Wilderness Trails. Experienced, armed game rangers guide groups of eight people through parts of the park that can best be explored by foot. It's a fantastic chance to discover the smaller creatures that can easily be overlooked from a moving vehicle.
The town of Pilgrims Rest is a living monument of the region's gold rush. Dullstroom is popular for trout and fly fishing.
