Gauteng is the economic heart of South Africa, rich in gold mines. It is also home to the area named the Cradle of Humankind for its huge number of hominid (earliest humans) fossils that was found in this area. The Sterkfontein Caves 70km south-west of Pretoria was declared a World Heritage site as almost 500 hominid fossils were found here to date. The most famous are the skull of Mrs Ples, an estimated 2,05 million year old fossil and Little Foot, an almost complete skeleton of more than 3 million years old.
