Trails available at De Postjes varies from 5 to 45 km, and would take approximately 1 to 4 hours to complete. Trails are suitable for a soft roader (a vehicle without low range), low range gears are required to complete this trail, the vehicle needs good ground clearance, trail guides are available, but not obligatory, camping facilities and covered accommodation is available, swimming and drinking water is available. De Postjes Trail is a celebration of the Great Karoo landscape, dominated by majestic mountains, wide-open plains, boulders and over-hanging cliffs. If your time machine could take you back 250 million years you'd be confronted by an inland sea fringed by cycads, where prehistoric reptiles and amphibians reigned. There are many fossilised dinosaur footprints scattered throughout the area, with two good examples on the trail in the Nuweveld mountains. The well-marked route crosses five farms, with the highlight being Mail Coach Pass, which plummets 300m in less than a kilometre, with a gradient of between 28 and 30 degrees in some places. Because of the possibility of fuel starvation on some makes of vehicle, we recommend that your fuel tanks be at least three-quarters full before attempting the pass. Other attractions include two waterfalls, a rock pool for swimming and the rare 'sterbome' on the slopes of the Tafelberg. The area presents a stark face for much of the year, but in spring it comes alive with flowers, and there are lynx, jackal, antelope and rock hyrax (dassies) to spot. Big raptors such as the black eagle nest in the rugged mountains. Maximum vehicles is 20. There is a fully equipped farmhouse which can accommodate eleven people, two 'corbelled' huts sleep six, the 'skoolkamer, sleeps 10, and two campsites. There are also various adventurous activities that includes horse trails, mountain biking, hiking and the pioneer farm Driefontein and the Siamese cattery at Middelfontein.(Information supplied by DriveOut Magazine).
