DECEPTION VALLEY in the northern reaches of the CKGR is one of the park’s better known attractions and one of the most
visited. It’s an 80 kilometre long valley (an ancient river course) running roughly north-south. Its name stems from the blue-grey clay of one of its pans which often appears to be full of water when actually bone dry.
Deception Valley Lodge is an owner-run venue in the area which offers very popular walks with the San.

After heavy rains in the rainy season, this road becomes very muddy. This road is compacted and hard, and the water stays on it. However, next to the road the water sinks into it and it becomes soggy - so best is to stay on the main track, as you will get stuck on the side. (Apr-15).
“After heavy rains in the rainy season this road can become extremely muddy. No matter how what you, do NOT leave the track as you will get stuck next to the road!! The road is compacted and hard and therefore the water does not disappear into the surface. However, next to the road the water sinks into the ground and it becomes soggy. It might look and feel hard, but a vehicle is heavy and will sink into the mud. As the locals say here in the rainy season: The road is a river stick to the river!!!” - Mietsie Visser, 2015/04/14
