The Gamkaberg Nature Reserve is located in the Klein Karoo, it is an isolated mountain range between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains. The reserve was established in 1974 to conserve a local population of endangered Cape Mountain Zebra and its natural habitat. The summers in the reserve can be very hot.
The vegetation consists of mountain fynbos, arid fynbos, succulent karoo and riverine vegetation. Some interesting plants are found in the reserve like the golden mimetes. The area is rich in Khoisan rock art. The solitude and isolation of Gamkaberg – a World Heritage Site – beg to be explored. Home to four vegetation biomes (Fynbos, Succulent Karoo, Subtropical Thicket and Evergreen Forest), the reserve’s 4x4 routes take in mesmerising landscapes. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife wonders from honey badger and red hartebeest to black-backed jackal and caracal. After discovering this incredible setting, settle down at one of Ou Kraal’s four herders huts, each big enough to sleep two guests. There is no electricity and an enviro waterless loo will take you back in time. That said, Gamkaberg’s pinch-me-beauty will trap your soul. Make sure to bring your own lighting, wood, drinking water, cutlery, bedding and towels. There is a campsite situated at the top of a mountain plateau, only accessible by 4×4.
