The Aussenkehr Nature Reserve was established to protect this highly sensitive eco-sensitive area. The Orange River, which also forms the border between South Africa and Namibia, separates it from the Richtersveld. There are two well-known 4WD trails in the reserve, known as the Quiver Tree Forest Trail and the German Outpost Trail on the Tracks4Africa map. Permits for these trails are available at the Norotshama River Resort.
Permits for entry to this nature reserve are obtainable from the Aussenkehr Spar.
