Nxai Pan National Park lies just north of the Maun-Nata main road and adjoins the northern border of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Wildlife migrates freely between these parks. The pan itself is a fossil lake bed about 40 km² in size which is covered with grass during the rainy season from November to April. The landscape of the park is dotted with clusters of Acacia trees and Mopane woodland in the north and smaller pans like Kudiakam and Khama Khama. The contrast between the dry and the wet seasons around the pans is quite spectacular. In the dry season you won't see many animals, but as soon as the rain arrives, the landscape is filled with thousands of animals. During the rainy summer season the pans provide breeding ground to flamingos, pelicans and waders while the surrounding grasslands are home to antelope and are visited seasonally by migrating wildebeest, zebra, and a range of predators.
