The majestic Drakensberg Mountains, the highest mountains range in Africa south of Kilimanjaro, will enchant you with its exceptional natural beauty. You can enter the Golden Gate Highlands National Park from the Free State town of Clarens or explore the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park from KwaZulu-Natal. The latter received World Heritage Status in 1999 for both its natural and cultural values and includes 12 reserves. This park is managed by Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife, the provincial wildlife management board. The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park also contain a large number of caves and rock shelters and exceptionally well preserved rock paintings made by the San people over a period of 4 000 years. The San no longer live in the vicinity. The area is a top tourist destination offering accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets from camping to luxury hotels. Thousands of trails, differing from short walks for the less energetic to challenging trails for the more adventurous hikers, are marked across the Drakensberg Mountains. (Updated Dec-15)
