Mountain Pass Naude's Nek Pass

Located in South Africa :: Eastern Cape  :: Rhodes
Category: Scenic Routes :: Mountain Pass

Naudésnek Pass lies On the gravel R396, 35 Km West of Mt Fletcher on the way to Maclear, in the Eastern Province of South Africa. In 1896, the Naudé brothers built a rough track across the mountains. Using picks, shovels, and a horse cart they followed the age old animal trail across the mountain. In 1911 George Mandy, a road engineer, constructed a military road along this way. From the foot of the pass, the road climbs steeply out of the beautiful Bell River valley in a series of switchbacks to the 2500 M-high summit, from where there are spectacular views over the undulating countryside to the south. Naudésnek Pass is the highest road lying completely in South Africa and can be traversed by most vehicles, but during winter time with heavy snowfall a 4X4 type of vehicle is recommended. A monument honouring the brothers can be seen at the foot of the Pass (1920 m).
