South Sudan is a very new country and was born when Africa’s largest country, Sudan, split into two in July 2011 creating South Sudan. The countries birth was a violent and bloody one. The people of South Sudan has only known war in their fight for independence from the north, and it did not take long for the country to turn on itself, with a civil war erupting between the new government and various rebel groups.
The country is one of the poorest and least developed nations on the planet. Being a very unknown country is likely the thing that will attract visitor here. South Sudan is bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic.
South Sudan has 14 national parks/protected areas and the world's second-largest animal migration. Check the safety status of the country before travel.
