South of Fort Portal is a crater field of about 20km long which incorporates some 30 small crater lakes amidst the farmlands. These were formed by volcanic activity 10 000 years ago. Lake Nkuruba, with good facilities and friendly, welcoming staff is a very popular stop-over. This steep crater is surrounded by virgin forest frequented by Guereza and Vervet monkeys and one can set up camp on the lawn under shade. Lake Nyabikere is bigger and also offers good facilities and an idyllic setting. (Sept 2021)
