Robben Island is an island off the coast of Bloubergstrand, Cape Town. It is a World Heritage Site and museum which served as a place for banishment, isolation and imprisonment during the Apartheid era. The island was also used as a post office, a grazing ground, a mental hospital and an outpost. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997. Robben Island is also known as the holding place for the imprisoned Nelson Mandela, who served 18 of his 27 years on the island. A ferry tour can be taken from V&A Waterfront to Robben Island. On the island the tour is guided by a former political prisoner of the island. (Aug-16)
