Shakati Private Game Reserve lies on the banks of the Mokolo river in the heart of malaria-free UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere in Limpopo. 20 km west of Vaalwater and 2½ hours from Johannesburg. Entrance on the R33 between Johannesburg and Botswana border. Perfect for stays/stop-overs for couples, families or business travellers.

Beautiful reserve and a small, cosy safari lodge: Accommodates 12-18 persons. Catering on request. Cell phone reception. Guided game drives/walks with the manager, or do your own walks.

Three Chalets: Each with 2 bedrooms (twin + double beds), lounge with 2 couches, fully equipped self-catering kitchen, fridge/freezer, bathroom + outdoor shower, barbecue area. Sleeps 6 per chalet. We sell firewood.

Reserve: River frontage, rocks and ridges, spectacular views and large indigenous bush and savannah areas.

Plenty of wildlife - Giraffe, Zebra, Kudu, Gemsbok, Hartebeest, Eland, Waterbok, Blesbok, Warthog, Impala, Leopard, Jackal, Porcupine etc. The absence of Elephant/Lion makes it safe to walk in the reserve (see these in nearby Marakele National park).

Prolific bird life - one of the highest bird diversities in the Waterberg. Shakati is accredited as Birder Friendly Establishment.
The entire complex (max.18 persons) can be rented at a discounted rate. Mid-week special: stay 4 nights, pay for 3.

Guests must report to reception on arrival. 2km from the tar road is the locked main gate to the reserve, which the manager must open for the guests before they can continue to the lodge/reception area. (Updated Feb-2018)

Go from Johannesburg/Pretoria on the N1 North towards Petersburg/Polokwane. Turn off the N1 at the Nylstroom/Modimolle toll gate. Distance from Johannesburg International airport to the Kranskop toll gate is approximately 160 km.
When leaving the Kranskop off-ramp turn left (west) onto the R33 heading towards Nylstroom/Modimolle approximately 12 km away.
Go straight through Nylstroom/Modimolle towards Vaalwater/Mabatlane approximately 60 km away, still following the R33.
In Vaalwater go right through the town and continue still a couple of kilometers until you on the left see a SPAR supermarket and on the right a T- junction signed R33 Ellisras/Lephalale (straight on goes to Thabazimbi).
Turn right following the R33 road towards Ellisras/Lephalale for approximately 20Km. Turn left at the Shakati Game Reserve sign onto the dirt road. Continue approximate 2 Km to the (locked) reserve gate. Call the reserve manager, who will meet you and let you in.

ACCESS:
Is by car. There is a helipad at the lodge.
The nearest airport would be in Vaalwater, Polokwane or Johannesburg. There are no shuttle services available.
Car rental services are available in Johannesburg, Ellisras/Lephalale or Warmbath/Bela-Bela.

AREA INFO:
There are National parks, deli shops/farms, restaurants, shops etc. in nearby Vaalwater.

BOOKINGS:
Pre-booking best, unannounced self-drive tourist welcome, but call reservation office from main gate to ensure availability.

CLIMATE:
Rainy season is from December to February.
