Ngwao Boswa or ‘Culture is Heritage’ is the name given to the Non-governmental organization that aims to empower vulnerable women. It was founded by 10 women living in Gumare Village in the Ngamiland District just two hours drive from the Nhabe museum in Maun. Today the NGO has grown to have 65 registered members who make and sell basketry at this vibrantly painted centre. They sell a wonderful array of baskets in all shapes and sizes.
Basket weaving is an intricate and delicate process that requires skillful, dedicated and patient hands to entwine and bind together the different coloured grasses to make these beautiful crafts. Not only does the centre provide a platform for basket weaving and crafts but it also facilitates a necessary meeting place for these women to gather, as they navigate the celebrations and hardships of rural life, together.
These intricately woven baskets can be purchased in the shop, or online through the Arts for Africa website listed below.
