Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains is located in South Africa’s north-eastern province of Mpumalanga, adjacent to the Swaziland border. The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains have become the 10th South African site to be inscribed on UNESCO’s prestigious World Heritage List and consists of Barberton Greenstone Belt. The mountain was proclaimed heritage site because they have the oldest and best preserved volcanic and sedimentary rock on the planet (estimated to be a breath-taking 3.6 billion years old). This area is rich in archaeological remains. There is the Barberton-Makhonjwa Geotrail was developed as a means of making the fascinating secrets of these mountains accessible to and easily understood by the public. Along with their exceptional geology, the area is rich in wild plants, animals and beautiful scenery. The site reflects a striking representation of when continents first began to form on primitive earth and is a prime example of the ongoing process of ecological and biological evolution of plants and animals. The geotrail is approximately 37km self-drive trail that begins in the town of Barberton and takes you up a steep and winding tarred road to where it ends just before the Bulembu Border Gate (Swaziland).
