The Barberton-Makhonjwa Geotrail is part of the Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains World Heritage Site. The geotrail was developed as a means of making the fascinating secrets of these mountains accessible to and easily understood by the public. Along with their exceptional geology, the area is rich in wild plants, animals and beautiful scenery. The geotrail is approximately 37km self-drive trail that begins in the town of Barberton and takes you up a steep and winding tarred road to where it ends just before the Bulembu Border Gate (Swaziland). The geotrail uses richly-illustrated panels that draw aside the curtains of arcane geological communication, and reveal the significance of the Barberton Greenstone Belt in every-day language and concepts. The geotrail was developed to preserve this geological heritage through building awareness and interest amongst local stakeholders and tourists.
