The Namakwaland region situated in the western part of the Northern Cape is famous for its breathtaking flower scenes and desert landscape. The area use to be called 'Little Namaqualand' with Southern Namibia known as 'Great Namaqualand' Well known towns include Pofadder and Calvinia forming the eastern border, Olifants River the Southern, Orange River Valley North and the Atlantic in the West. The Khoi Khoi people have been settled here for at least 2 000 years, but the area has since become diverse in culture and population as early explorers, farmers, missionaries, miners and run away slaves joined the Khoi Khoi in the unique part of the country. Every year thousands of tourist flock to Namakwaland as over 330 species of flowers blossom to form a multi coloured spring carpet. The Namaqua National Park is the best place to go flower watching with the 60 000ha Park showcasing the best of Namaqualand 's flower splendour.
