Kakamas was first known as Bassonsdrif, and when a proper settlement was established a town was founded in 1898, on the banks of the Orange River. Due to excellent irrigation work in those days, farmers today are still able to export quality table grapes to Europe and England, and one single Kakamas peach tree is the progenitor of 3 quarters of all the trees supplying the South African peach canning industry. The area is a fertile agricultural zone with vineyards, cotton and lucerne fields.
