Located in Namibia :: South Namibia  :: Seeheim Area
Category: Attraction :: Dam/Lake

Naute dam is situated outside of Keetmanshoop within the Karas region of Namibia, was officially commissioned in 1972, is 470 meters long, stands at 37 meters above the riverbed and is the third largest dam in Namibia. The dam is part of the Naute Recreational resort, considered a protected area in Namibia with opening and closing times and you need to obtain a permit. The dam is fed by the Lowen river and feeds into Fish River, south west part. The dam holds approximately 83 million cubic meters of water and is mainly used for irrigation of date palms and grapes within the Keetmanshoop area, while anglers occasionally visit. The surrounding area at the dam is rich in both flora and fauna with some game spotted, while it is also a bird haven paradise. Campers are allowed but the only facilities available are toilets and braai areas so they need to be self sufficient in terms of food stuff and water among others. The Naute dam area forms a great recreational resort to relax and unwind. A fee is payable to enter the resort and also view the dam which are obtained from MET. (Sept -13).
