Jointly built by the Namibian and Botswana governments, the Trans-Kalahari Highway follows
an old cattle route between South Africa and Namibia. Completed in 1998, it’s the first road south of the Sahara to connect
the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It stretches from Maputo (via the Maputo corridor in Mozambique) to Pretoria, enters
Botswana at the Pioneer border post, exits at the Mamuno border post and continues through Namibia via Windhoek
to Walvis Bay on the west coast.

Since the highway’s completion, the small village of Kang developed as an overnight stop on the route. Today the town
has a population of just over 7 000 people and boasts a fuel stop, restaurants, a tourist information centre, and a grocery store. This is a convenient pit stop for travellers heading for Khutse Game Reserve or the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, and there are
several accommodation options for those who want to overnight.

ACCOMMODATION:
If overnighting in the village doesn’t appeal, the Kalahari Rest Camp, 25km north of Kang, might. This venue is a private hunting and game lodge which sports comfortable rooms, a campsite, restaurant and swimming pool.

ATMS:
Don't depend on the ATM's working in Kang, be sure to have enough cash on you when travelling in Botswana.

FUEL:
There are a number of filling stations here, with nice convenience stores and neat ablutions. If you are travelling onto Hukuntsi, rather fill up here as you cannot always be assured of fuel in Hukuntsi.

HEALTHCARE:
There is no private doctor or hospital in Kang. There’s a basic clinic in town, but serious injuries are referred to the hospital in Jwaneng or Hukuntsi.

WOOD:
You are no longer allowed to collect wood from the bush in the CKGR, so remember to purchase your firewood beforehand!
