The Mauchberg at 2211 M, is the highest peak on the Long Tom Pass in southern part of the Transvaal Drakensberg. It was named after Karl Mauch, an amateur German geologist, born in Stetten in Remstal (Wurtemberg) near Stuttgart on the 7 May 1837. He arrived in South Africa in 1865 and starting on foot from Natal, went on several expeditions throughout South Africa. He studied the geology and geography of the land, making copious notes and was also an enthusiastic plant and animal observer. He discovered gold in several places, including the Witwatersrand. The map of the Transvaal, which he made with limited resources, was extremely accurate at the time. Karl Mauch died in Germany in 1875.
