The Bloemhof Dam, at the confluence of the Vaal and Vet Rivers, roughly 320 kilometres from Johannesburg 4km east of Bloemhof, is the sixth largest dam in South Africa. It has a capacity of 1 270 million m3 with a surface area of 223km2. It is thus a very large and shallow dam with high evaporation (approx 1800mm/a). The dam, originally known as Oppermansdrif Dam was constructed during the late sixties and was commissioned in 1970. The Vaalharts scheme is currently the largest user of water from Bloemhof Dam. The water from Bloemhof Dam is diverted from the Vaalharts Weir via canal to the irrigation scheme in the Vaalharts River catchment - a tributary of the Vaal River.
